From Living Root to Permanent Gem

The 33rd World Hakka Conference sought a commemorative object that embodied the Hakka spirit of rootedness and migration — something permanent enough to outlast the conference itself, yet personal enough to represent ancestral connection.

A cypress tree root from a historic Hakka settlement was selected as the carbon source. The challenge: extracting sufficient pure carbon from wood root tissue — structurally dense and chemically complex — to produce a gem-quality diamond of significant size.

Solution

Patented Botanical Carbon Extraction

BioGem Lab applied its patented bio-carbon extraction process (ZL 2010 1 0565778.9) to break down the lignin and cellulose structure of the cypress root, isolating elemental carbon through controlled thermal decomposition and acid purification.

The extracted carbon was purified to 99.95%+ and graphitized before HPHT synthesis. After 18–25 days of growth at 5.5 GPa and 1,450°C, a 5.33ct rough crystal was formed — large enough for an emerald cut that maximised the stone's clarity and geometric presence.

The finished 5.33ct emerald-cut diamond was presented at the 33rd World Hakka Conference as a permanent symbol of Hakka heritage — a piece of ancestral land transformed into a gem that will outlast generations.

The diamond was certified by CCIC with full traceability documentation, including the carbon source origin, extraction date, and synthesis parameters. It remains one of the largest botanical-source memorial diamonds produced by BioGem Lab.
